Kamala Harris, the U.S. Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate, has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the upcoming November election. This decision was met with backlash from circles connected to the “Zionist Lobby.” The issue was not Walz himself, but rather Harris’s decision not to choose Pennsylvania’s Jewish Governor, Josh Shapiro, who was at the top of her shortlist. Shapiro’s candidacy was almost certain.
However, the “Progressive Left” wing of the Democrats was opposed to Shapiro’s vice-presidential candidacy. The Progressive Left, in contrast to the “Centrist Democrats,” is far more effective in mobilizing young voters, communities of color, and lower-income groups. This made it difficult for Harris to ignore the preferences of this group, which represents nearly half of the Democratic representatives.
Harris’s presidential candidacy has injected great enthusiasm into the Democrats’ campaign, but this alone is not enough to defeat Trump. Harris needed the support of the Progressive Democrats. Choosing a vice-presidential candidate opposed by the Progressive wing could have posed a serious problem.
Progressive Democrats preferred Tim Walz as Harris’s running mate. Harris’s choice of Walz suggests that she had to consider internal party dynamics. According to Democrats, these elections are of existential importance for America’s future. In a polarized political climate, even the slightest shifts in votes are of strategic significance. It is no coincidence that Trump chose Senator J.D. Vance and Harris chose Walz as their running mates.
J.D. Vance and Tim Walz are typical White American politicians appealing to “Midwestern America,” a key region in the presidential elections. The reason Progressive Democrats support Walz, who is also not far from Centrist Democrats, is because he is a much more suitable candidate than Shapiro for advancing their social policy agenda.
Moreover, criticism of Israel within the U.S. Congress is gaining traction among the “Progressive Left.” Shapiro’s unconditional support for Israel and his criticism of students protesting the genocide in Gaza were seen as negatives. Like many other Democrats, Shapiro also criticized Netanyahu. In fact, Senate Democrats’ Leader Chuck Schumer, despite being a Zionist Jew, argued that Netanyahu should be ousted. Senator Schumer, known for his close ties to Netanyahu, had to calm the backlash from the Progressive wing.
Regardless of the reasons, the unconditional support for Israel within the Democratic Party becoming a divisive issue is a noteworthy development. Disturbed by this trend, the “Zionist Lobby” mobilized to ensure that Democratic representatives critical of Israel would lose in the primaries. The “American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)” fielded staunchly pro-Israel candidates against Democratic representatives Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, both of whom were critical of Israel. These two primaries were won by the candidates backed by unprecedented financial support from AIPAC. These elections, bought by “Big Money,” sparked debates within the Democratic camp. The internal “unease over Israel” also played a role in Harris’s decision not to choose Shapiro as her running mate.
Hardline pro-Israel circles and Republicans are attempting to portray Harris’s decision not to choose Shapiro as an “anti-Semitic” move. According to Republicans, the elimination of Shapiro, the only Jewish candidate on Harris’s shortlist, is clear evidence that the Democrats are becoming an anti-Israel entity. The Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, claimed that Shapiro was excluded because he is a pro-Israel Jew, saying, “There is a pro-Palestinian, and in some cases, even a pro-Hamas faction within the Democratic Party.”
It is evident that these reactions from Republicans are intended to rally the “Israel Lobby” and “American Jews” against Harris. Although Harris may not be fond of Netanyahu, she is a politician close to Israel and “AIPAC.” Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, is a Jewish lawyer known for his closeness to Israel. On the other hand, it is worth noting that Harris’s stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, was harassed by Zionist circles due to her pro-Palestinian social media posts.
