In 2023, over 2.3 billion people worldwide faced moderate or severe food insecurity—a staggering 45% increase from 1.6 billion in 2015.

To explore the state of food insecurity by world region, Visual Capitalist partnered with Brazil Potash to create this map, using data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), specialized agency of the United Nations.

    Food Insecurity by Country

Moderate food insecurity occurs when individuals experience uncertainty about their ability to obtain food, unwillingly compromising the quality or quantity of the food they consume. Conversely, severe food insecurity occurs when individuals cannot access food for at least one day.

Between 2021 and 2023, Nigeria had the largest food-insecure population, with over 161 million people who were moderately or severely food insecure. The runner-up was Pakistan, with nearly 106 million people who were food insecure.

While Nigeria and Pakistan had the most food-insecure people, several smaller nations had a larger proportion of their population in food insecurity.

Specifically, over 80% of people in countries such as Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Sierra Leone were food insecure between 2021 and 2023.

    Where Potash Comes In

Potash, a potassium-rich salt, is an essential nutrient for crop growth. It strengthens crops’ resistance to drought, disease, and pests while enhancing water efficiency and encouraging healthy root development.

By significantly boosting crop yields, potash plays a vital role in global food security and contributes to lower food prices worldwide.

Learn how you can get involved in solving global food insecurity and cultivate returns in your investment portfolio.
