Asia Policy 21.3
July 2026
This issue of Asia Policy examines how states across the Indo-Pacific are adapting to intensifying geoeconomic and security competition. The opening roundtable examines how Asia-Pacific middle powers are using geoeconomic strategies to preserve autonomy amid U.S.-China rivalry and a changing economic order. A second roundtable assesses the intersections of economic, legal, and traditional security for Taiwan and regional partners. The issue includes articles on how China’s scientific engagement with the Arctic furthers its national rejuvenation strategy and on how revitalized Russian–North Korean ties improve Russia’s position in the Northeast Asian security environment. The issue concludes with a book review roundtable on Saori N. Katada and Kei Koga’s Japan’s Grand Strategy: Liminal Power in an Uncertain World.
